Energy Efficient Appliances
A kitchen remodel is the perfect time to ditch the inefficient, energy-sucking appliances and go for the new models with ENERGY STAR® ratings. They've come a long way since those early days of wimpy, underpowered machines. Now you can get those dishes a spotless clean plus all the chill and all the heat you need with less energy.
With so many useful things to keep on hand in any kitchen, no part of the room should ever go to waste. Those narrow slots between the fridge and the wall, for instance, can have a sleek pull-out cabinet for canned goods or spices. Or, if possible, that's where you can hide away the broom and mop.
How about those low under-cabinet spaces behind the kickplates? You can have drawers built for them and store your table linens or serving platters there.
Go all the way to the ceiling with your cabinets, too. Unless you want a nice spot for your cat to hunker, the tops of the cabinets just get dirty. So why not use that space for more closed storage, instead? Place items you don't use as much out of the way on the top shelf. Or you could use the space to display your beautiful china.
Stainless steel appliances stormed the home kitchen scene 10 or more years ago, so it might be time to define them as a bit "retro." The forward-looking trends point to camouflaged appliance faces. Choose stoves, ovens and refrigerators that blend in with your color scheme rather than stand in stark contrast to it (unless you're going for the "tuxedo" look with a mix of dark and light).
Remember, you're no longer relegated to the traditional "palace guard" of a fridge. Now, you can find very functional under-the-counter fridges that you can place in your island or within your cabinetry. One placed near a sink with vegetables and meat, another near the microwave for leftovers and beverages not only saves you steps in meal preparation but it also conserves energy since you won't be opening one unit repeatedly for every little thing you need from it.
A very convenient storage design locates pull-out and multi-tier drawers where lower cabinets used to rule. With internal separators within large drawers and shallower upper-tier drawers, you can stash and retrieve everything so much easier from above. Forget crouching and rummaging. Put those days behind you when you re-design your kitchen.
Another handy design trend is the addition of concealed LED light ribbons. Since LEDs put out a lot of focused light from tiny little bulbs for so little energy, you can run them underneath the upper cabinets, above the cabinets to wash the ceiling, along the kickplates, inside cabinets and drawers. This way you'll have light wherever you need it and create a unique ambiance that your guests will certainly find compelling.
