Bathroom Remodel Lighting Ideas for Your Home
When it comes to lighting most homeowners do not give much thought to the bathroom. In most cases, the bathroom lighting either does not complement the bathroom or there is not enough illumination. The result is a drab space that is dark and damp. The right lighting, however, can create a relaxing mood and a vibrant atmosphere that makes spending time in the bathroom more enjoyable. Below are three types of lighting that you should consider adding to your bathroom remodel and tips for implementation.
As you consider the right type of lighting for your bathroom, start from the top down. Overhead fixtures will provide a broad spectrum of light to cover the entire area. The lighting should be strong enough to light up the room, but soft enough to keep the bathroom from feeling sterile. The goal here is to create a warm atmosphere. Avoid directional lighting above the counter. It can be too harsh on your image when looking in the mirror. The same goes for asymmetrical lighting and bulbs with exposed filaments. It can create a challenge for applying makeup or styling your hair.
Shower and Tub Lights
The most important issue in shower or tub light installation is safety. Although it’s tempting to mount lights on the walls, the best option is to install them on the ceiling. Whether you go with ceiling-mounted lighting or recessed lighting, make sure that you invest in ‘wet-location listed’ products. This type of lighting is certified as being water safe in any tub or shower. Also, never settle for just one light. Spread the light out over both ends of the tub. LED lights are the best option for bathrooms because they are energy-efficient and last a long time.
The focal point of vanity lights is the head and face of the person looking in the mirror. The best strategy for creating vanity lighting is to place the lights at head level on both sides. Mounting lights above the head or on one side will create shadows and uneven lighting. As with all other lighting in the bathroom, softer bulbs will make a greater impression than harsh ultra-light bulbs. Something to consider with vanity lights is the use of dimmers. This way you have control over the amount of light directly in front of your face. Dimmers can also change the ambiance in a bathroom.
