In our ongoing series on how to plan out a new deck, we've talked about where to place your deck, what materials to choose, and what features a modern deck should have. Now we're going to take a look at the future — specifically, what happens when you are finished with your deck? What sort of improvements can you think about once you get comfortable with your renovation? Or maybe you already have a deck, and you're wondering what kind of upgrades would be worthwhile or improve value.
To help out, let's finish off by looking at potential future improvements you can make to your deck, and why these changes can be so useful if you decide to do some more work!
Add Enclosures or Other Privacy Features
As you start using your new deck and get used to it, you may start to notice that it's not quite as protected as it could be. For example, it may get a little too much sun in your favorite spot, and you have to head inside sooner than you'd like. Or maybe you see a little too much of your neighbors from the deck, and you'd like more privacy.
These are signs that you should upgrade with an enclosure. There are many different remodel options for you to choose here! A cloth canopy or durable cloth curtain is easy to set up and provides just the right amount of shade. You can also create deck fences and ceilings with beautiful wooden latticework that still lets the light in while also providing you with extra privacy. Even an on-deck pergola can offer more privacy as well as a great area for eating or working.
Build Out Your Landscaping Around Your Deck
Do you wish there was a little more to look at around your deck? Then it's time for a landscaping project! Consider building a plant border around your deck, or add an herb or flower garden beside the deck for easy access (and pretty views). Even planter boxes can add a lot of life and beauty to a deck. A water feature helps make your yard more interesting while also offering the soothing sound of water in the background. There are all kinds of excellent landscaping projects you can try here.
Extend Your Deck or Upgrade Your Deck Features
Need more space? Extend your deck! Wraparound decks are increasingly popular and give you plenty of space to play or just stretch out. If it's been a few years, this is also a great opportunity to refinish your deck or take care of underlying problems.
Install More Deck Seating
One thing that many decks lack is proper seating. After you've held a number of parties, you may realize that you need more seating. Add a few deck chairs, and consider more long-term projects like building up deck benches for sitting and railing counters for those who prefer to lean.
