Home Additions Part 2 of 2: Questions to Ask Before Adding On
If you have decided that you need more space within your home, you may be looking at completing a home addition project. This can involve everything from adding a bathroom to your space to adding a whole second story to your home. When you are looking to complete home additions, there are specific questions that you should ask the construction company you are looking at hiring to ensure a home addition is right for you. Here are four of those questions.
Will the Renovation Fit Within Your Budget?
Before you begin any home addition project, sit down and figure out what your budget for the project is and how much you can afford to spend. Then ask a contractor to give you a rough idea as to how much the project will cost. There is no point in proceeding with a renovation project if the renovations you are after do not fit within your budget.
Will the Addition Add Value to Your Home?
If you have determined that the renovation fits within your budget, the next thing you need to determine is whether the addition will add value to your home, as some home renovation projects do not add a lot of value. If you plan on living in your home forever, you may not care about the value that the project brings. You just want your home to suit your needs. But if you plan on selling anytime in the future, you want to make sure that the project increases the value so you can recoup the cost.
Is Remodeling Cost Effective?
The third question to ask is whether remodeling is cost effective. In some cases, your home may be smaller than you would like, but buying a new home may be more cost effective than adding on the space you need. In other cases, building makes more sense and is more cost effective. Always ask the contractor which option is the most cost effective based on the current real estate market in your area, building costs and the amount of space you need.
Are There Any Zoning Issues You Have to Contend With?
The last question to ask as you go about completing a home addition project is whether there are any zoning issues you may have to contend with. Zoning laws may affect how big you can build your home or whether you can build up if you are looking to complete a second story addition. Talk with a contractor about what changes you want to be made to your home and then ask if zoning laws will impact the project.
